First residents set to benefit from increased parking following completion of improvement works

Gannet Lane residents on the Hemmingwell estate will benefit from access to increased parking following completion of improvement works to the first of 34 former disused garage sites.

The Gannet Lane site completed in partnership with our contractor, Phoenix Surfacing Ltd, is the first of 15 due to be completed by the end of March 2025. The works include digging up the former garage surfaces and resurfacing with block paving, tidying existing boundaries such as brickwork, fencing and installing bollards. Additionally, gardens previously secured by garages will be fenced and new LED street lighting will be installed where the land is owned Greatwell Homes.

Following completion of the first 15, works to create increased parking areas in Thrush Lane, Sandpiper Lane Osprey Lane, Nightingale Lane, Shearwater Lane and Robin Lane in Hemmingwell will also be developed. As well as at an extra site in Cowper Road, Queensway.

Jason Farr, project officer at Greatwell Homes, said:
“On some of our busiest estates, suitable parking has been an issue in the past. This project has taken derelict and unused garages and turned them into extra parking spaces, which has been very much welcomed by customers and local residents in the area. “We’re proud and pleased to be completing these works as we know additional parking is much needed and will make a positive contribution to the neighbourhoods we work in.”

The works, which are part of a two-year project to transform 34 garage sites, started on Monday 6 January 2025, after planning permission was granted for a total of 15 sites across the two estates. The garages were first demolished in August 2024 and have remained fenced off for safety and security reasons.

Greatwell Homes has partnered with contractor, Phoenix Surfacing Ltd to kickstart the works in Gannet and Fulmar Lane on the Hemmingwell estate. While in Queensway works will be completed by family-run contractor, Ainge and Sons in Kilnway and Minerva Way.

Prior to the works starting on each site, the contractors will put up notices to advise local residents. Greatwell Homes will also provide regular updates to directly affected customers and more generally about the project progress on this website.
